To those around in the exciting days of the “Great War” the 42nd Infantry Division were the victorious troops who were paraded up Fifth Avenue and Main Streets throughout the country. Nicknamed the “Rainbow Division” for its diverse collection of men, this group is followed through a span of eventful years in this episode of the U.S. Army’s The Big Picture. The film, from the National Archives and Records Administration, shows some of the finest footage from World War I as well as graphic footage of the Division as it contributed to the victory in Europe in World War II. Today, the group lives on through the 42nd Division of the New York National Guard, who wear the hallowed insignia of the Rainbow. (30 minutes)
