Rhone Restoration Ecological Project (02:37)


Sourced in the Alps, the river flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Flooding in December 2003 was partly due to efforts to contain it for economic gain. Scientists are working to build a more sustainable river.

Can a river be restored, just like work of art or a castle? This film recounts the ecological adventure that is gaining ground, worldwide, of giving back space and freedom to landscaped rivers. In December 2003, the Rhône ruptured its embankments, claiming lives and displacing thousands. It had been thought the river was under control, but chaotic planning—in order to tame it and subjugate it for economic and energy needs—was partly responsible for the catastrophe. Embankments, dams, roads, and railways spoiled the Rhône’s landscapes and impoverished its biodiversity. This documentary follows efforts of the Rhône River Restoration Project to reduce human impact and increase wildlife habitats by recreating natural contours, reconnecting secondary branches, and increasing flow speed in diversion areas.
