The video plus audibook set explains Wallerstein’s “world systems theory.” Capitalism and a world political economy came into being simultaneously. The world can be broken down into three categories with respect to countries and regions: core, periphery, and semi-periphery. World systems theory accepts the Marxist understanding of surplus value and profit as a key dynamic of capitalism but adds another dimension of exploitation: the transfer of wealth from the periphery and semi-periphery to the core, the developed nations.
